How to Hang a Banner with Grommets in 6 Easy Steps
Ever wondered how those awesome looking banners are hung and what makes them stay there for so long without falling off? Let me guess, you just bought a banner, but you have no idea how it needs to be hung, right? And you definitely do not want to pay someone money to hang it! Well, you are in the right place. Good thing there are signs and banners companies in Memphis, like Eco Signs and Banners, who can help answer all these questions for you…at no cost to you! I mean, who doesn’t love free consultation?? Anyway, since we get this question all the time, in this article, I have decided to give you a general idea about how to hang a banner with grommets in 6 easy steps. Read on, dear friends.
What are grommets anyway?
Grommets are basically little (plastic or metal) rings which you will see on banners which are used to properly hang the banner. These small rings go along the lining of the holes made in the banners. Their main job is to make sure that the weight of the banner is evenly distributed around the corners. Rope or some other hanging material is then placed through these grommets to tie the banner to nails on the wall or wherever else you decide to hang your banner. Hanging a banner properly is really important if you want a lot of people to notice the banner, and more importantly, for it to look nice! But, you also need to make sure that the banner is hung at a good location where it will not tear off very easily…for example, this can happen if you hang your banner in a very windy place (there are methods to take care of this problem also, don’t worry).
What materials do I need?
The materials you will need are:
- Nails or Hooks
- Cables or Wires
- Hanging Clips
Here are the steps you need to follow to hang a banner properly:
Step 1. Figure out where you want to hang the banner
Choosing the best location to hang your banner can sometimes be tricky. But, depending on where you are and what materials are available, you can choose to hang a banner on a wall, surface of a place, ropes, or in between 2 poles. Here in Memphis, at Eco Signs and Banners, we have seen customers hang banners in all of these manners. After you chose your location, make sure that it is clean, does not have any sharp edged (duh!), and not near any objects which can tear up your beautiful banner (again…duh!).
Step 2. Figure out the distance between the grommets
To hang your banner in place you can choose between zip ties, ropes, or even hanging clips. If you want to get creative and use some other materials, go for it! So, why do you need to figure out the distance between the grommets? It’s so that you are able to send ropes through the holes evenly. Be sure to make a note of this distance and save this important piece of information. You will need it here in just a second!
Step 3. Make a loop using the rope through the holes of your banner
Time to grab that measurement again! Told you would need it. Now that you know the distance between each grommet, use this information to figure out how long your rope needs to be in order to be able to hang the banner. Now, go ahead and pass one end of the rope through the hole on one side of the banner and then pull it out from the other end. I hope when you were figuring out the length of the rope, you took into account that the rope needs to be long enough to be tied to whatever hooks on the wall, nails, or poles between which the banner will be hung.
Step 4. Hammer hooks or nails to the wall
If your banner needs to be hung directly on the hooks or nails on the wall (not using ropes or wires), you should go ahead and place these in the wall at this point. Important: You can figure out how far apart the nails need to be by using this rule of thumb: Use the distance between the grommets to determine how far apart the nails need to be from one another. Here at Eco Signs and Banners, over the years, we have discovered that the best spacing between grommets is usually about 2 feet.
Step 5. Hold your banner against the wall or surface
Hold the banner against the wall (or whatever surface you plan to hang it on) horizontally in such a way that the grommets align with the nails (or hooks) you mounted on the wall. If you hung your banner between 2 poles, get someone to help you hold one side of the banner while you hold the other side.
Step 6. Put the nails/hooks through the grommets on your banner
Make sure that the nails (or hooks) pass through the grommets properly so that the weight of the banner is supported and it is hung steady.
Hanging your banner outdoors?
If you are planning to hang this banner outdoors (especially where there is a lot of wind), you will realize that the wind may eventually tear your banner down over time. Before you hang the banner, find out the direction of the wind. It is better not to hang a banner directly in the path of constant heavy winds. Perhaps, you could hang the banner at an angle that does not make it come directly in opposition to the wind.
Or… you can consider placing some wind slits in your banner. Here is a video which explains how to put wind slits in your banner:
